Circles in the Stream

CIRCLES IN THE STREAM is a powerful play about youth and the justice system which focuses on the increasing use of restorative justice conferences (mandated by police, crown counsel, and judges) in cases of crime and conflict involving young people.  It is about rights, responsibilities and empowerment: an opportunity for young audiences to understand and acknowledge the specific sources of conflict, and to experience the surprising potential for restorative justice to transform conflict into cooperation and to repair the harm caused to individuals and communities.

Using live theatre and multimedia projections an incident is explored from multiple points of view.  A severe harm has occurred.  Victim, offender, family members, supporters and community representatives (school, police) have agreed to a conference led by a trained RJ facilitator.  As they begin to talk, everyone affected participates in the process, their voices all count, issues are appropriately deliberated, and no one is allowed to tyrannize others.  Every participant has their moment that prompts pin-drop silence.  And everyone at some stage prompts laughter.  It’s the laughter of recognition from an audience only one step removed from the story.

CIRCLES IN THE STREAM is available to visit middle schools in the CRD during
JANUARY & FEBRUARY of 2009

Length of play:  50-55 min.
Length of follow-up workshops: 45 – 60 min. (minimum)
Cost: $200  (performance, workshops, study guide included)

Designed to compliment emerging programs in Restitution and restorative practice, CIRCLES IN THE STREAM is accompanied by an extensive study guide (including on line resources) and optional follow-up workshops in role play, restorative processes and forum theatre.

The Restorative Justice Youth Outreach Group is made up of engaged youth ages 15-25, who together have formally trained in restorative practices including conference facilitation and mentorship, and who are now in the process of creating and rehearsing CIRCLES IN THE STREAM under the direction of local theatre artist Mark Hellman: a trained RJ facilitator with over 25 years experience in theatre in education and community development through arts & culture.

Produced by RESTORATIVE JUSTICE VICTORIA, this special project is made possible
